UN Security Council Delegation Visits HEAL Africa 2009On a two-day visit to D. R. Congo, the United Nations Security Council delegation chose to visit HEAL Africa to see the impact local organizations have amidst the insecurity of the region. The delegation was received on May 18 by the HEAL Africa staff and was briefed on HEAL Africa’s efforts to not only treat and support survivors of sexual violence, but most importantly to work with communities to develop systems of care for survivors. Two women shared their testimony about how they had been brutally raped by armed men and about their treatment at HEAL Africa. Following their testimony the delegation spoke with HEAL Africa’s legal clinic staff who represent survivors of sexual violence in court. The delegation also visited the operating room at the hospital and the training center where patients of the hospital can learn how to read, write, sew, learn business and financial skills, and where counseling is also available. At the end of the visit, French Ambassador to the UN, Jean-Maurice Ripert stated, “HEAL Africa does the greatest and most important work there is. You treat the body and heal soul. We are at your side. Thank you and keep hope.” |
