Her fistula was repaired, and then she was given shelter

Charité was raped in front of her family, then she was forced to watch as her family was being killed. The rapists then destroyed her eyes so she wouldn't recognize them.

When she came to HEAL Africa, her eyes were badly infected; one had to be removed. The other is blind. Her general condition was poor. Her fistula was repaired, and then she was given shelter by a local leader of women's groups. She was taught a skill, and is able to earn small amounts of money to spend, is able to take care of herself and work. Her benefactress still pays about $100 per month in hospital fees because of her fragile medical condition.

Charité functions very well in her safe environment. She has a beautiful voice. She is a skilled massage therapist. She washes and cleans. But in Goma she can’t earn enough to pay her own hospital care.
